The office of the President has described as a falsehood, recent statement attributed to president Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf as saying the leader of the Congress for Democratic Change or CDC, George Weah stands a 90% chance ahead of other candidates including the ruling Unity Party for the 2017 presidential elections.

Presidential Press Secretary Jeromelick M. Piah told this paper Friday that the report which first appeared in a local daily about the President’s support to Weah was a complete ‘falsehood and baseless.

Mr. Piah said the publication of such falsehood has the propensity to undermine joint efforts of both President Sirleaf and Mr. Weah, reemphasizing that the article is nothing but total fabrication of falsehood.

He said the Executive Mansion has thrown a challenge to the publisher to provide evidence to the publication. The local daily in its publication indicated that President Sirleaf allegedly made the statement during an interview in Paris, France, about a month ago.

But Mr. Piah maintained that at no time President Sirleaf ever committed herself to the presidential bid of Mr. Weah and that the appointment of Mr. Weah as Ambassador of Peace and Reconciliation is not based on political motive. Instead, it is purely about reconciliation and peace, he added.

Piah said it was unthinkable for the President who hails from another political institution to be pledging her support to the opposition, saying the article is an affront to the ruling Unity party. He notes that the primary focus of President Sirleaf is to promote peace and reconciliation among Liberians.

“Our president is not concern about the 2017 presidential elections; her concern now is uniting the people and meeting her developmental goals set for the people of Liberia. I don’t know why people are really politicizing the appointment of Ambassador Weah?

There are many opposition gurus that are in this government including the Information Minister Lewis Brown, Dr. Togba Nah Tipoteh, Dr. Marcus Dahn and the Secretary General of the CDC, Mr. Nathaniel McGill. They are all part of this government. I think the concern of people should be how to move our country forward’, he said in a moderate tune.

Commenting on the issue of funding of the peace and reconciliation program under the Weah’s leadership, Mr. Piah stressed that there is no appointment in government that the president expects individuals to use their own resources for government activities. He noted that government will fully fund the work of Mr. Weah and he has the support of the president.
